Japan Prosecutors Appeal Decision to Release Nissan’s Kelly on Bail

WSJ Digest 20181225

Greg Kelly, who was stripped of his role as a representative director at the carmaker, had his bail set at an equivalent of $636,000, which was subsequently paid via his Japanese lawyer. Prosecutors can file up to two appeals against the decision to release a person on bail, although it is rare for them to try more than once.
TOKYO–Japanese prosecutors Tuesday appealed a decision by a Tokyo court earlier in the day to release on bail Greg Kelly, the former Nissan Motor Co. representative director arrested alongside former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
He has been in jail since Now. 19, and is in dire need of surgery to fix a spinal condition, his lawyer and wife have said. Mr. Kelly’s wife, Dee, released a video over the weekend in which she said, “My husband is a man of honor and integrity. He holds himself to the highest ethical standards.”
Nissan stripped Mr. Kelly of his role as representative director on No. 22, but he remains a director. A representative director has special rights under Japanese law to sign documents on behalf of the company.
