NJ Legal Awards: Attorney of the Year, Law Firm of the Year Announced

The 2020 New Jersey Legal Awards, held virtually, proved to be a different look for the Law Journal’s recognitions, but viewers heard from many of the honorees over the course of the program.

The Law Journal announced its winners of the Attorney of the Year, Frank Corrado, and Law Firm of the Year, McCarter & English, during its awards program Wednesday.

The 2020 New Jersey Legal Awards, held virtually and recorded, proved to be a different look for the Law Journal’s recognitions; nevertheless, viewers heard from many of the honorees across all categories over the course of the program.

Corrado, of Barry, Corrado & Grassi in Wildwood, was selected was selected winner from a field of three Attorney of the Year finalists, and was recognized for his work in of the most important public interest cases in the state, including ACLU v. Hendricks, a constitutional law case concerning the state’s authority to award grants to two religious schools.

Corrado, in a video accepting the award, called it “one of the high points of my professional career.”

“I intend to spend what remains of my professional career increasing my commitment to public service law, in particular, my commitment to the First Amendment, which I consider one of the bedrocks of our legal system,” Corrado said in the video.

The two Attorney of the Year finalists, also honored during Wednesday’s virtual awards program, are CJ Griffin of Pashman Stein Walder Hayden, who was recognized for taking leadership of the firm’s newly launched Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center as well as further impactful work in public records law practice; and Michelle Movahed of McCarter & English, for her leadership in expanding the firm’s pro bono program, including the Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark.

Corrado offered his congratulations to them in his acceptance video.

Also at the New Jersey Legal Awards Wednesday, the Law Journal announced the winner of its inaugural Law Firm of the Year Award: McCarter & English, which was selected from a field of three finalists recognized for the breadth of their excellent work in 2019, with wins in multiple other Legal Awards categories.

McCarter—in addition to Movahed garnering accolades as an Attorney of the Year finalist— received awards in these categories: Mentor, Dealmaker of the Year, and New Leaders of the Bar. And beyond bulking up its pro bono program, the firm found success in both litigation and transactional practices in 2019.

The two Law Firm of the Year finalists are Cole Schotz, which brought in Unsung Hero, Innovator, Dealmaker of the Year, and New Leader of the Bar honors this year; and Lerner David Littenberg Krumholz & Mentlik, which garnered Unsung Hero, Mentor, Dealmaker of Year, and Litigation Department of the Year (IP litigation) honors.
